Why did this guy not play in the AHL?
He is completing his second NHL season. The 2023 #13 overall pick is small at 5' 10". They love his motor. He forechecks. But he's small.
He NEVER scores. He had 11 goals in 2024 and has not gotten one iota more productive this season. He should be skating no higher than the 3rd line because he doesn't score. He should be considered trade bait. He contributes nothing special. There are pleanty of other forwards that forecheck, have a motor AND can score.

There has been absolutely zero signs of growth here in two complete seasons. I'd much rather have Mittelstadt in his role, and he isn't perfect either. Mittlestadt, however, was a MUCH better set-up man than Benson has ever shown. Notice it was two years ago, when Mittelstadt was on the team, that Thompson, Cozens, Peterka and Skinner had good years. When Mittlestadt left their flames all dimmed. Benson did not step into that role at all.
PLAN: trade him.
