Bills-Patriots numbers to know: These 4 stats could shape Buffalo's game vs. New England

6

Josh Allen has scored a rushing TD in five straight games. With one Sunday, he would join Justin Fields (2022) and Johnny Lujack (1950) as the only QBs all-time with a rushing TD in six straight.

That’s how many takeaways the New England defense has this season, tied for third lowest in the league. The Bills have 25 takeaways, which is fifth best in the league.

27

New England ranks 28th in sacks with 27, and the Patriots have gone three of the past four games without getting a sack. Take away a nine-sack outing vs. Chicago and the Pats would be last in sacks by a lot.

171

Josh Allen racked up 171 passing yards on throws outside the pocket in the victory over Detroit. It’s the most in a game in the NFL since Russell Wilson had 175 for Seattle in 2021.

A question to ponder: Does beating the Patriots mean as much now that Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are gone? You don't need a Magic 8 ball to conclude all signs point to a Buffalo victory. Head coach Sean McDermott has traditionally feasted on rookie quarterbacks, and while New England's Drake Maye has flashed promise, his supporting cast, in the words of the Grinch, stink, stank, stunk. Josh Allen should continue to build his MVP case, James Cook and Co. should control the clock with the running game and the defense should be able to have a bounce-back performance after back-to-back weeks of giving up 40-plus points. The holiday celebrations start early with a laugher of a win. Bills, 40-17.

The NFL scheduling gods flexed this game to 4:25 p.m. because they believed the United States of America should see quarterback Josh Allen and the Bills dunk on a 3-11 Patriots team. This is not the New England of yesteryear, and this game was not flexed because of its competitive nature. Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye could cause the Bills fits in the future, but right now, New England does not have the supporting cast around him for the team to be effective. The Bills' defense will want to clean things up after giving up 40-plus points in back-to-back contests. Still, the Patriots may score a few more points late once this game has been long out of hand. Bills, 34-20.

To fend off any complacency, all Bills coach Sean McDermott has to do is show the video of last year’s two games against New England, a Patriots final-minute win and a 27-21 Bills win. Just don’t show them much video of this year’s Patriots because, whew, they just aren’t very good. They’re 3-11, can’t move the football (30th in yards), stink on third down (29th) and can’t score (31st). Quarterback Drake Maye will be good once he gets some people around him. This is a get-right game for the Bills’ defense. Bills, 31-14.

Poor drafting over the past five years has put the New England franchise in a big hole. It’s going to take more than one offseason to dig out of it, even though the Patriots have a huge amount of money to spend in the coming offseason. They have holes at expensive positions – both tackle spots, edge rushers, defensive tackles and wide receivers. On the upside, Drake Maye might be the answer at quarterback. Given the relative lack of depth on offensive lines leaguewide, a team needs a QB who can be a big-time playmaker on the move and outside the structure of the offense. Maye is probably going to be on the run a lot on Sunday. The Bills need to assert the big edge they have on the defensive line against the Pats’ patchwork offensive line. Bills, 30-16.

Patriots at Bills: How to watch, odds, expert picks as Buffalo chases playoff bye

In terms of mismatches on paper, the New England Patriots vs. the Buffalo Bills game is easily at the top of the list on this week’s slate of games. The Bills enter the game as a two-touchdown favorite and have the second-highest point spread in the NFL this week, behind only Green Bay over New Orleans.

How to watch Patriots at Bills

From the Patriots’ perspective, there’s not much to be excited about at this point in the season beyond the development of rookie quarterback Drake Maye. And even that has been a little rocky due to issues protecting the football (nine interceptions and two fumbles, though he has not lost any of the fumbles).

The Patriots rank 31st in points per game and 23rd in points per game against. They seem to be getting worse as the season progresses under first-year head coach Jerod Mayo, who has developed a bad habit of deflecting blame after losses.

New England has lost four games in a row and now goes on the road to Buffalo to play one of the best teams in football.

Speaking of, while the Bills have had some defensive issues the past couple of weeks, their offense is clicking on all cylinders. They are second in the NFL, averaging 31.2 points per game, and have scored at least 30 points in eight consecutive games.

Quarterback Josh Allen is playing like an MVP, running back James Cook has topped the 100-yard mark and averaged over seven yards per carry in two of his past three games, and the wide receiver group is coming together. Already owning an 11-3 record and playing the Patriots twice and Jets once over their final three games, the Bills have a great path to the No. 2 seed in the AFC.

WTF? man.

I was just about to start the Official thread but I was drafted for a hair dye mission and had to acquire some fish heads for the fish broth for Christmas Eve.
