Joey Bosa spent a couple days feeling sorry for himself.

After that, the Buffalo Bills’ veteran defensive end got to work on getting back to full health after a calf injury suffered during defensive line drills in the spring meant missing all of the team’s work up to and including mandatory minicamp.

That work paid off, as Bosa was a full participant on the first day of training camp at St. John Fisher University.

“The body is perfectly fine. Calf is no issue anymore,” he said after practice. “I was feeling good weeks ago, so I was able to get a full offseason in and train really hard. I feel great coming into camp. It’s fun to be out there again. Obviously, you’ve got to knock the rust off, as usual during camp – cut down the mental errors, first day jitters a little bit, but it was a good day.”

The Bills signed Bosa to a one-year, prove-it contract this offseason after injuries led to him being able to play in just 28 games in the regular season over the past three years with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Given that, the optics of Bosa not participating in the spring were bad. He’s aware of that.

“After the first few days of feeling sorry for myself and going through, ‘Oh my God, this is happening again,’ you get over it and you start improving,” he said. “You just keep working to get back healthy. It ended up being a very minor thing. I improved a lot faster than other people thought I would.”

Injury report

Four players did not participate in the first practice of training camp: Tight end Dawson Knox (hamstring), right tackle Spencer Brown (back), wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (lower leg strain) and center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger (calf).

General manager Brandon Beane said after practice that Knox tweaked his hamstring training the other day.

Brown, who has a history of back injuries, had something “flare up,” according to Beane.
“We want to be cautious,” the GM said. “It’s always different now versus in season. Now, you’re going to try to be more cautious.”

Ramping up

NFL teams go through a gradual ramp-up process at the start of training camp. The first five practices are designed to gradually increase the intensity and duration of practice in an effort to reduce injuries. As such, Wednesday’s workout was about 90 minutes long, with players in just helmets and shorts.

Lineup notes

With Knox out, rookie Jackson Hawes and Zach Davidson each got some reps with the starters. … The starting defensive line was Greg Rousseau and A.J. Epenesa at edge rusher, with Ed Oliver and DaQaun Jones at tackle. The second team featured Bosa and Michael Hoecht at edge, with Larry Ogunjobi and Deone Walker at tackle. Veteran Tre’Davious White started at cornerback, although rookie Maxwell Hairston got some first-team looks. Call it a 60/40 split in favor of White. … The top three receivers were easily Keon Coleman, Khalil Shakir and Josh Palmer, in no particular order. … Mitch Trubisky was the No. 2 quarterback behind Josh Allen and ahead of Mike White.

Highlights

Hairston was beat by receiver K.J. Hamler on a play, but showed great recovery speed to get in position to break up the pass. It’s the type of play that made him a first-round pick. … Hamler did beat rookie defensive back Jordan Hancock for a touchdown in team drills. … Tyler Bass went 5 for 5 on field goals, with a long of 48 yards.

Lockdown

The Bills signed Christian Benford to a contract extension this offseason, and it was a no-fly zone around the team’s No. 1 cornerback during Wednesday’s practice. Benford had a nice pass defended against Allen on a throw intended for Coleman early in 11-on-11 work, which focused exclusively on the red zone.

What’s ahead

The team returns to the practice field at St. John Fisher at 9:45 a.m. Thursday.
