Josh Allen will attempt to buck 37 years of history by winning MVP Thursday at NFL Honors

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen will attempt to buck 37 years of history during Thursday night’s NFL Honors.

On Jan. 10, Allen was named second-team All Pro behind Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. The last time an NFL MVP wasn’t first-team All Pro was Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway in 1987.

In 2003, quarterbacks Peyton Manning of Indianapolis and Steve McNair of Tennessee tied for the MVP award. Manning was first-team All Pro, McNair second team.

Twenty awards and the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame induction class will be revealed Thursday night at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans. The event starts at 9 p.m. EST and will be televised by Fox and NFL Network.

Allen and Jackson are joined as MVP finalists by Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley and quarterbacks Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals) and Jared Goff (Detroit Lions).

Allen and Jackson were the top two MVP contenders for the season’s balance. Jackson is looking for his third MVP.

Allen had one more regular-season win (13 to 12). After the 50-member voting panel turned in their decision, Allen’s Bills eliminated Jackson’s Ravens in the AFC divisional round.

“Josh is the best player on the football field this season,” Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins said late in the regular season. “I say it over and over and over and over: What else does he have to show the world that he’s more deserving to hold up that MVP trophy (than anybody else) and that he is not the best player in the NFL?”

Allen finished second in 2020 and third in 2022 in the MVP voting. This season, he was the only quarterback to beat Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes in the regular season and the only quarterback to have wins over the No. 1 playoff seeds in the AFC (Chiefs) and NFC (Detroit Lions). Allen was also the first player in league history with at least 28 touchdown passes and 12 rushing touchdowns.

Allen is attempting to join running backs O.J. Simpson (1973) and Thurman Thomas (1991) as Bills MVP winners.

“I’ve been around this league long enough to know (what an MVP looks like) and what he has done on this team and for this organization, I have a hard time believing that someone has done more,” Bills coach Sean McDermott said in December. “At the end of the day, Josh Allen is the MVP.”
