Remember, Hitler was never at Wannsee. He never influenced its decisions, never signed off on them, did not orchestrate them, but fully approved of the decisions made there. Similarly, Stalin was never on record on supporting the horrible famine known as Holodomor (The Hunger), and in fact publicly denounced it with his Dizzy With Success speech. However, pacifying Ukrainian nationalism was certainly part of the reason for the famine.

Some unsolicited advice, nevertheless being offered in good faith: the second part of this comment is unnecessary. If someone makes you defend Stalin over the course of the conversation it's worthwhile to have things in your backpocket, but it's rhetorically important to keep the parallel focused on the overt fascism of the Trump administration and its collaborators mirroring Nazi Germany.
To that end, mentioning Stalin or the USSR serves as a discursive sidetrack. Best to keep the desk light shining straight in the perp's face.
