Trump Announces Victory Day For WWII But Gets The Date Wrong: 'A Complete Moron'
Now don't get me wrong, our greatest generation is owed an enormous debt of gratitude. The steel mills of Pennsylvania, Missouri, and Ohio, the factories of Detroit, Buffalo, Kansas City, Wichita, Los Angelas, the ship yards of New Port News and 16 million uniformed men and women contributed greatly to victory over Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo. So I am all for VE Day and VJ Day. However, to say "We won both Wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything. That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!”
Is a criminal distortion of history. It spits in the face of our British allies who tenaciously and heroically defended their home islands in 1940 when they were alone against the Nazi beast. Even worse, it spits in the face of the Soviet people. I will give you that it was primarily the United States that took the fight to the Japanese with considerable assistance by the Filippinos, Chinese, French, British, and Australians, but in Europe? Like them or hate them it was the Soviet Union that won that war. Consider the following, 80 percent of all German casualties were suffered on the eastern front. Also, lets not forget that it wasn't the British, Americans, French, or anyone else who took Berlin, it was the Red Army. Lets not forget that it was Moscow that destroyed the myth of German invincibility, lets not forget that it was Stalingrad and Chuikov's tenacious house by house defense of that city and Zhukov's brilliant counterstroke that turned the tide in Europe. Lets not forget that it was at Kursk in 1943 that put the operational initiative permanently in the hands of the Soviets and the allies. Citadel is why the allies were able to slug through Italy. Lets not forget that it was Bagration which greatly assisted the stunning military operations in France made by Patton, Bradley, Montgomery, etc. Also, lets look at the shear costs. Our greatest generation? We lost about 500,000 in that war. Every family had at least one person who served in that war. However, in terms of material, treasure, and blood, the Soviets expended far more than anyone else. 27 million combat dead. That's a mind boggling number so let me help you put a face on that number. Imagine if you will that we had experienced not one 9/11 but 3, and not just on 9/11 but every day from 9/11 and for the next 1,417 days.
So yes May 8 should always be Victory in Europe (VE) Day and our greatest generation should always be honored as well as that of France and Great Britain, but to say we won that war? No, it was the Soviets. At least in Europe.
Now lets talk about the war to end all wars, Veterans Day, previously Armistace Day. Okay, to be sure, the dough boys won that war. If for no other reason than that there were so many damn many of us and because we turned our factories into an arsenal of democracy. However, we still celebrate that armistace and we still honor our veterans on that day.
Say Donald, considering your cuts to the VA and all manner of other cutbacks, maybe you -who called our veterans and pows "losers" and you can't gaslight me that you didn't - maybe you should learn well the lessons of how we treated our veterans from that war. Maybe you should ensure your desire to slash the government so you can make bank won't fuck our veterans. We have a lot of homeless veterans and at levels not seen since the Bonus Army. Maybe we should expand the GI Bill and maybe we should improve the mental health and medical treatment available to our veterans. We can and should discuss the validity and necessity of the wars we send them to fight in, but damn it you asshole these people went into harm's way for our country. The least we can do for them and their families is to ensure they should want for nothing and see what we can do to cut down that 22 suicides a day rate our veterans have.
Lastly, and its not in the article, but well fuck you Donald, you want to have a full military parade for your birthday? Seriously? Fuck you. Hey Donald, you are a president, not a king. Sure a plurality voted your ass in -with the strong possibility that a certain illegal immigrant who lives in the White House may have brought about with tampering and hacking - but a majority can vote your ass out. Hey Donald, when Americans have parades we have high school marching bands, we have floats, ballooons, silly mascots, etc. Wanna know who has military parades? Dictators. Hey bookmark it guys, Its 1:20 eastern time on May 3, and yeah Putin is a dictator. Its why he has massive military parades. Kim is a dictator, he has massive military parades. Xi, same thing.
