Sabres recap: Isak Rosen scores two goals in 5-2 loss at Utah


Isak Rosen scored two goals, but the Buffalo Sabres lost a two-goal lead in a 5-2 loss Wednesday to Utah at the Delta Center.

The Sabres (5-7-4) dropped their sixth loss on the road, and they're now 1-3-4 in their last eight games. The Mammoth scored three unanswered goals in the third period and snapped a three-game losing streak, at the expense of the Sabres. entering the game, the Mammoth had lost five of their previous six games, with the only win coming Nov. 4, a 2-1 overtime win against the Sabres.

Rosen teamed with Noah Ostlund and Jack Quinn on the Sabres' third line, and the three combined for six shots on goal and two goals. The Sabres' top line, though, of Alex Tuch, Tage Thompson and Ryan McLeod didn't register a shot on goal.

How it happened​

First period: Isak Rosen redirected Jack Quinn’s shot from the left circle past Utah goalie Karel Vejmelka (17 saves) at 5:33 of the first period. Nearly attached to Mammoth defenseman Nick DeSimone and behind Utah goalie Karel Vejmelka on the other side of the net, Rosen tipped the puck into the open half of the goal.

The Sabres put three shots on goal on nearly four minutes of power-play time late in the first, after Lawson Crouse was penalized for roughing at 15:26 following a scuffle with Jordan Greenway in front of the Sabres bench, and Kevin Stenlund was called for high sticking at 17:19.

Second period: Rosen scored his second goal and gave the Sabres a 2-0 lead at 6:43 of the second on a one-timer from the right circle, off a pass from Noah Ostlund. Nick DeSimone’s one-timer from the top of the right circle beat Sabres goalie Colten Ellis (32 saves) cut the lead to 2-1 at 10:42 of the second, off a pass from Michael Carcone that caromed off the boards and to DeSimone, who is from East Amherst.

Third period: Former Sabre JJ Peterka tied the game on a shot from the left circle 52 seconds into the third, after Ellis stopped DeSimone on a glove save 10 seconds earlier. Then, Lawson Crouse gave the Mammoth a 3-2 lead 2 1/2 minutes later, beating Ellis close and up high, off a feed from Peterka, and Nick Schmaltz's 10th goal of the year, at 10:09, opened the lead to 4-2. Utah's Clayton Keller scored an empty-net goal with 26.6 seconds left.

What’s next​

The Sabres play at Colorado at 9 p.m. Thursday, the third game of a four-game road trip.
