Elkin was renowned for his work in the local Buffalo theater community and mentored generations of students as a longtime professor at the University at Buffalo.
Born in 1932, Elkin began his career as a child actor in New York City, where he grew up, and later made his mark in Western New York as the founder and artistic director of Shakespeare in Delaware Park. Elkin retired from that role a few years ago after nearly five decades of being part of the summer festival, which is celebrating its 50th season.
He appeared frequently as an actor in area shows, worked at Alleyway Theatre, co-founded the Jewish Repertory Theatre and even acted briefly on the soap opera “Edge of Night.”
In 1995, his name was placed in the Western New York Theatre Hall of Fame.
Elkin taught theatre at UB since 1969 and served as department chair during two stints. He was the first recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching and was later honored with the title of Distinguished Service Professor.
He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University.
Elkin suffered a stroke at the beginning of November and his health had been declining since. His family helped raise over $26,000 as part of a GoFundMe campaign to bring him home from months of inpatient care.
