WASHINGTON, Dec 23 (Reuters) - Members of Donald Trump's presidential transition team are laying the groundwork for the United States to withdraw from the World Health Organization on the first day of his second term, according to a health law expert familiar with the discussions.

"I have it on good authority that he plans to withdraw, probably on Day One or very early in his administration," said Lawrence Gostin, professor of global health at Georgetown University in Washington and director of the WHO Collaborating Center on National and Global Health Law.

The Financial Times was first to report on the plans, citing two experts. The second expert, former White House COVID-19 response coordinator Ashish Jha, was not immediately available for comment.

The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The plan, which aligns with Trump's longstanding criticism of the U.N. health agency, would mark a dramatic shift in U.S. global health policy and further isolate Washington from international efforts to battle pandemics.

Trump has nominated several critics of the organization to top public health positions, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic who is up for the post of secretary of Health and Human Services, which oversees all major U.S. health agencies including the CDC and FDA.

Trump initiated the year-long withdrawal process from the WHO in 2020 but six months later his successor, President Joe Biden, reversed the decision.

Trump has argued that the agency failed to hold China accountable for the early spread of COVID-19. He has repeatedly called the WHO a puppet of Beijing and vowed to redirect U.S. contributions to domestic health initiatives.

A WHO spokesperson declined to directly comment but referred Reuters to comments by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a press briefing on Dec. 10 in which he was asked whether he was concerned that the Trump administration would withdraw from the organization.

Tedros said at the time that the WHO needed to give the U.S. time and space for the transition. He also voiced confidence that states could finalize a pandemic agreement by May 2025.

Critics warn that a U.S. withdrawal could undermine global disease surveillance and emergency response systems.

"The U.S. would lose influence and clout in global health and China would fill the vacuum. I can't imagine a world without a robust WHO. But U.S. withdrawal would severely weaken the agency," Gostin said.

Yeah, that is really gonna stop diseases from spreading. Stupid, stupid, stupid. @SpikedLemonade what are Canadian immigration policies? No wait, this fuckstick might actually try to invade Canada. Okay, anyone know what Australia or New Zealand's immigration policies are? We may be living in Nevil Schute Norway's On the Beach.

Australia and New Zealand have had very tight immigration polices for a few decades now.

Mostly because there were not jobs that the people born there would not do.

My Argentina born cousin just left New Zealand since he could not get his 6 month work visas renewed for a 3rd time.

AND Canada is tightening up quickly and may be even quicker if the Conservatives win a federal election in the Spring.

Human Relocation worldwide is tightening it seems.

We aren't as welcome in Australia as we once were. Our Covid failure has a bit to do with that

I'm just thinking the long game. Biden, Obama, even Bush to a limited extent, at least had some respect for law and order. They were predictable. They might have done terrible things, especially Bush, but there was at least rhyme or reason for it. Hell, even Putin, Assad, Kim Jong Un etc have rhyme and reason for what they do. Trump? He's like giving a psychopath with limited intelligence a machine gun and a bag full of hand grenades. My big worry regarding Ukraine has been for the past decade has not been what will Obama or Biden, some EU nation, or Putin or Zelensky will do, but what will Trump do. Obama, Biden, Putin, Zelensky, Stoltenberg and his successor, Borrell and Vand Der Leyen? Its, you do this we do that. You sanction this we sanction that. You launch a rocket at our city we launch a rocket at your electricity. You invade, we sink your ship, etc. . . . Trump? Its like having Heath Ledger's Joker. He'd just like to see the world burn. When neither Kiev or Moscow agrees to his peace deal (and why would they? Seriously what's in it for either one?) he is very likely to send troops to Ukraine and get directly involved in that terrible war. Since such a war will invariably go nuclear I want to get the fugg out of the Northern Hemisphere before the shit really hits the fan especially because 12 miles from my house there's a nuclear weapons components plant. 50 miles to my east are the B-2s. Half hour to my northwest? The army war college at Leavenworth. Fort Riley is 90 minutes to my west. IRS has a huge office park here, there are all sorts of federal buildings down town. I live in a very target rich environment so I have a vested interest in Trump not starting WWIII. Again, I could mostly trust Biden and Putin and their EU and Ukrainian counterparts to play mostly by the rules. I don't Trust to be that sober minded.

Oh were leaving WHO? Great....
Don't be so surprised, half the population thinks that the world was created in 6 days 6000 years ago in October.

An alarmingly increasing number of people are rejecting what we have known since Eratosthenes (and probably for some time before him) he was able to get the circumference of the earth to within a couple hundred miles)

We have seeing surges in all sorts of easily preventable childhood diseases because people are rejecting vaccines even though these vaccines have very low breakthrough rates (less than 2 to 5 percent depending on doses) and even though the side effects are very limited.

So yeah, its not surprising that a bunch of idiots voted for an idiot and that idiot is proving a danger to the public health.

Funny how only the stupid, Trump-worshipping MAGA fucks approve of this.

MAGAs are so fucking twisted and brainwashed that if Trump said on Day 1, a human sacrifice of each first born son was required, every damn one of them would be cheering it on...

We used to have a balance in government. Progressives (liberals) pushed us to think outside the box.
Conservatives put a reality check on 'idealistic enthusiasm'.
MAGA is just a populist cult worshipping a con man.
MAGAs never want to reach a compromise or consensus.
For MAGAs, it's 'my way or I blow it up'.
I was very unhappy when Republicans began to consider the far right to be the Party's 'base'. Goldwater warned against it, but the lure of RW radical votes was too much. The 2012 Republican 'autopsy' had it right, but it too was ignored.

He had no problem with those same people those calling others names and using broad brushes to paint their opponents.

Dude was so biased

It's a very very VERY sketchy website that pushes division and hate
Of course it does!!! LOL .. it's an ALT Right site, it's literally the PERFECT example of the dangers of the "free market and social media". It' just that NO ONE on that site gets that. They don't understand that it's been the REPUBLICANS neoliberal policies that have gotten us to where we are at today. I understand WHY the democrats have lost in their voting base. The moderate democrats gave in wayyyyy too many times. This is the Republicans show now, and we are ALL about to find out WHAT they replace the new deal with. They have successfully divided this country and their man child is running the show. Bipartisanship will either be GONE, or our democracy prevails, and even if it does what will the carnage be?

But the guy posted it unironically. It's a dangerous site that's the very definition of radicalization

I have not seen anything on Unz that is even remotely worth my time. Unz isn't an independent media outlet. Its not the pro Russia views that some of its authors had. Hell if opposing the NATO regime change operations in southwest Asia and the former Soviet space were its problems, I would be posting from it. However, that is not its problem. Its problem is that its irredeemably racist and antisemitic. We aren't talking about condemning Netanyahu's apartheid state, which isn fine and for that I go straight to Haaretz which is a model of humanity and opposition journalism. No, it a website that does deep dives in defense of hating Jews because they are Jews, racism that would make a klansbitch blush, fascist rhetoric, junk science, and conspiracy theories. Its a dark corner of the web that makes me have my doubts about humanity. Its not presenting another point of view. No, there are good sources out there for that. Its the definition of junk journalism and misinformation. I am not calling for it to be squashed, but I am saying its not a reliable source of information. If you see it, the Daily Caller, Conservative Treehouse, or the Hedge well you can essentially dismiss it out of hand. It lies, distorts, and misinforms and that is unacceptable here, and its unacceptable damn well everywhere.
