Elon Musk staff has been caught plugging in hard drives inside the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the Treasury Department, and the General Services Administration (GSA). His staff encountered resistance when demanding that Treasury officials grant access to systems managing the flow of more than $6 trillion annually to programs like Social Security and Medicare. Tensions escalated when Musk’s aides were discovered at OPM accessing systems, including a vast database known as the Enterprise Human Resources Integration (EHRI), which contains sensitive information such as dates of birth, Social Security numbers, performance appraisals, home addresses, pay grades, and length of service for government employees. In response to employees speaking out, Musk’s aides locked civil servants out of computer systems and offices, with reports of personal items being searched.
A hostile takeover of the government is unfolding in real time, and it is imperative that prompt action is taken to prevent further erosion of democratic institutions. Elon Musk's involvement in government affairs must be terminated immediately. His role in the FAA Director's resignation and his current encroachment on the Treasury Department are deeply concerning.
Reuters reports that DOGE aides of Elon Musk have locked staffers of a U.S. government human resources agency out of the computer systems with millions of employees' personal information.
Even the senior officials of the Office of Personnel Management have had their access to the data systems revoked.
"We have no visibility into what they are doing with the computer and data systems," one of the officials said. "That is creating great concern. There is no oversight. It creates real cybersecurity and hacking implications."
There is now, since Trump's firing of government Inspectors General, NO oversight of either Trump OR Musk.
One key database, the OPM officials cited, is Enterprise Human Resources Integration, which has "all of the birthdates, Social Security numbers, appraisals, home addresses, pay grades and lengths of service of government workers."
The Office of Personnel Management is a nonpartisan agency that manages the federal workforce, and would typically be consulted ahead of significant personnel changes. They were not informed of this proposal, people familiar with the situation told The Washington Post.
In the weeks since Trump took office, Musk has moved to take control of the office, according to the Post. He visited the office on Friday and put several of his longtime allies in key positions.
Musk had sofa beds brought into the OPM office to ensure his personal team could work non-stop. The area can only be accessed with a special security badge or a security escort, an OPM employee said.
That includes Anthony Armstrong, who helped Musk buy Twitter, according to the Post. Others include Brian Bjelde from SpaceX and Amanda Scales who worked at a Musk AI firm. The trio are now in leadership positions in the office.
Musk’s team also built the system that sent 2.3 million government employees an email last week offering buyouts to anyone who voluntarily leaves their job. That system did not exist before Trump took office, the Post noted.
The email was very similar to one sent by Musk to Twitter employees after he took over.
DOGE was originally created to "supply ideas" to Trump on "cutting governement waste". This was changed by Executive Order by Trump on his first day of office, to "upgrading IT services".
Apparently this is what was intended. For Musk to physically take over computers storing sensitive information, and locking the government agencies in charge of it OUT.
What happens next is not known.
Meanwhile, the highest-ranking career Treasury official resigned today (Friday) over DOGE access to sensitive payment systems, including Social Security and Medicare.
David A. Lebryk, who has served in nonpolitical roles at the Treasury Department since 1989, the Washington Post reported. He was appointed as acting treasury secretary by President Donald Trump until Scott Bessent was confirmed.
Lebryk had a dispute with DOGE officials over access to payment systems that disburse trillions of dollars for government services, including Social Security and Medicare. The system also pays out tax refunds, salaries for federal workers, and payments to government contractors.
DOGE officials have been asking for access to the system since the election.
Why they want it, and what they intend to do, is also not known.
Trump announced at 5pm Friday a "PAUSE" of all Government websites, effective immediately. Some departments have already gone dark, while unknown changes are being made.
