There are several reasons why fans of the Buffalo Bills should have optimism entering their Week 13 Sunday Night Football clash with the San Francisco 49ers (and the final six games of the season, for that matter), but there’s one that’s perhaps being overlooked as the team prepares for the upcoming primetime bout: recent history is on their side.

Buffalo is coming off its Week 12 bye, and since taking the reins of the team in 2017, head coach Sean McDermott is undefeated coming out of a week off. He’s 7-0 coming off a bye, with his wins coming against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2017, the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018, the Miami Dolphins in 2019, the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020, the Dolphins again in 2021, the Green Bay Packers in 2022, and the Kansas City Chiefs last season.

It’s the hallmark of a good coach; the bye week can sometimes be dangerous in that players and coaches have the opportunity to lose focus, but McDermott, historically, has never let that happen. His teams never look as though they haven’t played football in two weeks after coming off a bye; also consider that the Bills are a perfect 5-0 at home this year and that this Sunday’s matchup will take place at Highmark Stadium, and the ball appears to be firmly in Buffalo’s court this week.

The 49ers do not look like the team that has appeared in the NFC Championship game in four of the last five seasons through the first 12 weeks of the 2024 campaign, as they’re currently tied for last place in the NFC West at 5-6. They’re still a talented team that’s coached by one of the league’s brightest offensive minds in Kyle Shanahan, but they’ve been decimated by injuries, and they may again be without starting quarterback Brock Purdy this week.

McDermott has a 1-0 career record against San Francisco, a 2020 matchup in which Josh Allen threw for 375 yards and four touchdowns against his boyhood club. There’s a laundry list of reasons—McDermott’s prowess out of the bye week among them—why Buffalo should take care of business against San Francisco this weekend, but games aren’t played on paper; the sideline boss will be sure to have his team prepared for the inter-conference bout.

Since I wont be around much over the thanksgiving break lets get this going.

This game seemed like it was going to be a tough one when the sched came out. Now it just does not look like that anymore. SF is on the decline. They are hurt and playing bad ball man. We are coming of the bye week where we usually always do great. So in theory this should be an easy one. Is Purdy playing? .... that might be the only shot for them. If its that Allen dude I think we have a field day. All we have to do is stop their run game.

It’s that time of year again in Western New York. The Buffalo metro area is bracing for heavy lake-effect snowfall leading up to kickoff between the Bills (9-2) and 49ers (5-6) on “Sunday Night Football.”

According to the National Weather Service, the greatest snow amounts in the Buffalo area are expected across the nearby Southern suburbs, where Buffalo’s Highmark Stadium is located. They could see as much as 1-to-2 feet of total snow accumulation by Sunday evening. Snow showers are expected to begin late Friday with a lake-effect snow warning in effect from 7 a.m. ET on Saturday until 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, about 90 minutes before kickoff at 8:20 p.m. ET.

The NWS warns, “Travel will be very difficult to impossible in areas of heavy lake effect snow with deep snow cover on roads and extremely poor visibility.”

The Bills organization is also making preparations ahead of time, putting out a public call for show shovelers on Friday.

Asked this week about potential impact of the wintery conditions, head coach Sean McDermott mostly downplayed the weather while giving a nod to the fans.

“We have some experience with it,” head coach Sean McDermott said Wednesday. “We can’t control the weather. … Our staff does a phenomenal job. The people that have shown up for the years that I’ve been here at a minimum — and beyond my time here — of shoveling the stadium out. I think that’ll happen again if need be and we’ll get ready to play a football game.”

Following San Francisco’s final practice of the week on Friday, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters, “It’s part of the deal. We pay attention to it. Not necessarily how cold always, but mainly the wind, snow and stuff like that. … I know in Buffalo sometimes it can snow three feet in one spot and not snow 20 minutes away. So, you’ve really got to be ready for anything and deal with whatever it is at 8 (p.m.).”

Temperatures at kickoff are expected to be in the mid-20s with winds between 5-10 mph.

Sloppy weather, sloppy play, Bills clinch, or is it clench (I learned through Phonics) a 5th straight division title.

Watching Channel 4 Buffalo, it looks like most of everything is already shutting down for tomorrow.

I suspect this game will bumped tomorrow night.

I can't see any reason schedule-wise why it can't be delayed to Monday or Tuesday Night and NOT moved from being played in Buffalo.

The Bills play in LA on Sunday and the 49'ers in San Fran on Sunday.

Four keys for Buffalo Bills to beat the San Francisco 49ers on a snowy 'Sunday Night Football'

1. Keep it clean

Due to the possible weather and just general ball security, the Bills will want to have as clean a game as possible. With an ever-changing forecast, the game may not see a ton of snow, but it still could be windy and cold. Bills head coach Sean McDermott knows to be ready for anything. “We’ve been through it before, so we have some experience with it,” McDermott said Wednesday. “We can’t control the weather.” With an added emphasis on a clean game, look for Josh Allen to end his interception streak. The 49ers, meanwhile, have as many takeaways as they have turnovers this season, with 16 apiece. Their 16 giveaways (nine picks and seven lost fumbles) are among the worst in the league.

2. Don’t let the early parts of the game deter you

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan is a master at scripting the early parts of games. Watch for the 49ers to get in a rhythm early, no matter who is running the offense. It’s still Shanahan pulling the strings. “Simply put, he is a great coach,” McDermott said of Shanahan. “We’ve both been in the league a long time. We’ve gone up against each other a number of times in the NFC South, it was for a few years there and twice a year. I don’t think there’s many coaches in this league better than Kyle Shanahan, I really don’t.” Even if San Francisco strings together some long drives early, the Bills’ defense should know it has the edge in this matchup.

3. And if it is Brock Purdy?

This will be the first time that the Bills have faced Brock Purdy, if the injured quarterback is able to play. That means a little more prep work for McDermott, who had high praise for Purdy’s game and traits. “At least for me, it takes a little bit more time to get myself familiar with the offense or the player, in this case, with Brock,” McDermott said. “You have a chance to TV watch or TV scout the team or the player just as you’re watching casually as fans do, like we do when we’re not competing. So, it takes a little bit longer to get, I guess, comfortable, if you will, with what you’re watching.”

4. Continue the high-off-the-bye streak

The Bills are perfect coming off the bye under McDermott: 7-0. They have a chance to extend the streak Sunday night. McDermott says there’s not necessarily a trick to coming off the bye; it’s more sticking to the usual. After all, he’s certainly a man who loves a routine. “That’s a good question. I don’t really have the, ‘Hey, this is exactly what we do formula.’ It’s just more of, I think us really just getting back to what we do, getting back to the basics,” McDermott said. “Today (Wednesday) we’re going to practice and have a normal practice in pads and working on the fundamentals that we need to have for a good football team in San Francisco coming here.”

49ers-Bills: Who you got? Buffalo News writers make their predictions on Sunday's game

Jay Skurski

There is cause for concern with this game. Namely, the 49ers, who entered the year with Super Bowl aspirations, are a desperate team in need of a victory to keep their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs by way of winning the NFC West alive. The Bills remain squarely in the running for the AFC’s No. 1 seed, so there is plenty to play for, even with a fifth straight AFC East title a foregone conclusion. Buffalo is unbeaten under Sean McDermott following the bye week. The 49ers are too banged up and are going to be too travel fatigued to leave Orchard Park with a victory. Bills, 30-20.

Katherine Fitzgerald

Months ago, when the schedule came out, this Sunday Night Football tilt was a game I circled. Now, with the 49ers are banged up as they are, and the Bills rolling at 9-2, it feels like more of a “just take care of business” matchup for Buffalo. Sure, things can always get weird, but the Bills should hold the edge on both sides of the ball here. With weather a factor, look for a heavy load for running back James Cook, who could match his career-high total of 25 carries. Bills, 30-17.

Mark Gaughan

If San Francisco shows up in Orchard Park with as many injuries as it had in Green Bay, then Bills fans watching on TV will be able to go to bed early. If Brock Purdy doesn’t play quarterback for the Niners, this should be a comfortable victory for the Bills. For the purposes of this pick, let’s presume Purdy plays. The Niners have the kind of offense that can control the clock and give the Bills’ defense trouble, even though running back Christian McCaffrey has not looked as explosive as usual since returning from Achilles problems three games ago. The Niners don’t want to get off schedule against the Bills’ pass rush. Defenses have been unafraid to blitz Purdy this season. The Bills’ offense should be able to mount a decent run game against the Niners. Look for the Bills to power up and try to pound it. If you can keep the Niners’ defensive line from dominating, you should be able to have success against this defense. The guess here is windy, wintry weather will help keep the game close. Bills, 24-17.

Ryan O'Halloran

During an NFL season, the schedule taketh and giveth. For the Bills, it taketh with three consecutive road games early in the season, but on Sunday night, it giveth in terms of a rest and travel advantage. San Francisco played last week at Green Bay; the Bills were off. And now the 49ers fly all the way to Western New York and it’s almost a double travel edge for the Bills. The 49ers’ rush defense has allowed at least 110 yards in three of their last five games, so in expected cold temperatures, the Bills need to lean on running back James Cook to post his second 100-yard game of the year. Bills, 27-17.
