The Buffalo Bills defensive line is already thin, and now a possible reinforcement seems to be up in the air.

After the Bills' 13-12 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, coach Sean McDermott was asked if he has any update on defensive tackle Ed Oliver, who suffered a biceps injury against the Carolina Panthers in late October.

The Bills had hoped Oliver would be back in time for the start of the AFC playoffs, but McDermott did not confirm that timeline Sunday night.

“Nothing that I can talk about right now,” McDermott said Sunday after the game. “I think he’s moving in a good direction, but a little bit of a, call it a setback this past week, maybe.

“So, I don’t know if it’s going to affect his timeline or not yet. I don’t know enough. But that’s all I have for you right now.”

The Bills played Sunday without defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, who is battling an ankle injury from Week 15 at New England, and defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, who has a nagging calf injury that began pregame in Week 6 in Atlanta.

Already without Oliver, and then without Phillips and Jones, the Bills had rookies T.J. Sanders and Deone Walker to start the game Sunday.

“You guys know we've been trying to spin the dial, trying to figure things out, and tonight I was very, very pleased with what I saw from the defensive side,” McDermott said. “It wasn't perfect, and it's not going to be perfect, but some of those young guys and just the overall relentless nature of the defense and getting off the field on third down.”

The Bills placed Oliver on injured reserve on Oct. 28. On Nov. 17, he shared an update on his Instagram story that his biceps surgery had gone well. A day after that, Oliver was back at the Bills facility during practice on the sideline, and he’s been getting some work in at One Bills Drive ever since.

Can’t train against tearing a bicep. These men are freaks and physics dictates these injuries.

I think you maybe could train to prevent hammies or Quad injuries although I can’t imagine how. It’s not like athletic trainers keep secrets.

Not against the tear. Certainly on the recovery.

Its not about keeping secrets. They could just, hear me out ............... not be good at their job. Are there no bad accountants out there? bad lawyers? bad mechanics? bad coaches? bad quarterbacks? bad kickers?

Why cant we admit we have a shitty training staff? These guys have soft tissue injuries all the time. They have gotten hurt in pre game warmups for fucks sake

The other bit of equation is the player. Trainers cannot train the just instruct how and what to train. Player needs to actually do it well.

I’m still in the these things happen. Look at other teams. Soft tissue injuries are gonna happen and do. It’s not isolated to Buffalo and Miami

I mean, without looking it up, the Bills are always fighting injuries every year. It's ridiculous, but not a coincidence

I don't care about others, don't know if they have as many soft issue as we do. All I know is that we are always hurt. It cant just be bad luck and these things happen.
You could be a Rams fan and cut and paste this in A Rams forum, same with Dolphins 9ers packers Bucs etc.

Every team faces injuries. Bills just had a bunch in a short span. Big boy game. Big boys get ouchies.

This year Bills had a lot of injuries. Looking at man games lost as a gauge, Bills were 3rd in the NFL but in 2024 they were 29th so it’s not a year after year “thing” just sucked when guys like Hoecht show promise them gone. Still amazing how the OLine held up.

RBs had little issue. LB issue but I think that is partly due to lack of size. CB? No idea.

You really are a serial apologist for anything that is corporate. McDipshit is a great coach, the Bills are a fantastic organization with the best conditioning staff, Beane is the best GM there is. Quite sickening actually.

Never once said any of those things. Apologist and putting up statistics to point out a skewed perspective are two different things. Sorry bitching and blaming feels so warm and yummy to so many.

BS, you do have a history of being a serial apologist or maybe a contrarian. Either way, quite sickening. What statistics did you put up? Being a Pollyanna is dumb.

Oh no Hoecht tore his Achilles !!! McDermott sucks… Beane should be fired. Torn bicep? Fire the entire coaching staff immediately…

(Nope, doesn’t feel any better)
