'Everything will go through the roof': Americans stock up in preparation for Trump tariffs

As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take the oath of office in just over a week, many Americans are attempting to minimize their own financial burden by purchasing foreign-made goods before his proposed tariffs go into effect.

The Guardian reported that U.S. residents who have been planning to buy goods that could be subjected to the tariffs have been acting preemptively to buy what they need before prices surge. The collectively worry among consumers isn't unwarranted, since large retailers like Walmart have already warned that any new tariff duties would be passed along to customers. This has led to Americans planning on making large purchases in the future to quickly revise their timelines.

"My partner is laying in supplies and materials for a new roof we had planned for the spring," West Virginia resident Jen Thomas told the outlet. "While the rush of a second Trump presidency is still exciting for many West Virginians, my partner and I are neither excited nor optimistic about the next four years."

The president-elect has proposed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff on all goods imported from China. CBS News reported in November that this could lead to steep price hikes on consumer electronics like smartphones, video game consoles and laptop computers, with smartphones potentially costing up to $213 more per device. Appliances could also come at a higher cost if the tariffs are imposed, with the National Retail Federation predicting Americans will spend anywhere from $6.4 billion to $10.9 billion more on appliances under the proposed new import duties.

"We are purchasing a new washer and dryer... which we have put off due to medical bills," La Crosse, Wisconsin resident Liza Gilbert said. "It will be even harder to afford in January."

The United States imports a significant amount of produce from Mexico, meaning grocery prices could also increase under Trump's tariff program. Virginia resident Carol Lee Wood told the Guardian that she has been buying several grocery staples in bulk like rice, beans, powdered milk and freeze-dried produce.

"Everything will go through the roof when [Trump] takes office," Wood said. "I wish I could stockpile gasoline and avocados!"

Aside from consumers, American businesses are also cautioning Trump to not jack up tariffs on foreign imports. Timothy Boyle, who is the CEO of apparel company Columbia Sportswear, said in December that if the motivation behind Trump's signature policy proposal is to motivate companies to move production back to the United States, it would be a failure. He instead warned that it would further squeeze Americans already frustrated about high prices.

"So to be moving products and production back here in the U.S., is not going to happen," Boyle said. "Today, consumers are paying the tariffs. and when they buy products that are made offshore, they're they're paying significant tariffs, which are included in the products... The costs are going to be passed on to the consumer just the way they are today."

It’s funny asking Trump voters how tariffs work and who pays for them.

If you haven’t tried this experiment in real life, it’s worth a cheap laugh.

Their answers are so wrong it’s beyond parody.

You can’t reason with cultists, nor can you convince them that facts exist, so you might as well enjoy a few laughs as our country spirals into an irreversible idiocracy.
Just a heads up Biden allowed some of Trump's tariffs from his first go round to continue. I know of several commodity based healthcare products i.e nitrile exam gloves that were hit with tariffs effective 1.1.25. Now some manufacturers operating in China are moving to other countries for production. Malaysia is an example as these companies have plants there. Guess what happened? Prices still went up as wages are slightly higher than in China and no jobs made it's way back to the US worker. I am a never Trumper but I have to call it as it is. Additional tariffs will be a disaster for the economy.

Correct, he allowed some of Trump's tariffs to continue. Notice no one is singing Bidens praise even close to the way Trumpers praise their god.

I agree ... My fear is Trump is using tariff's as a negotiating tactic. If China or anyone else calls his bluff he will be forced to go through with it to save face. The guy has been an absolute failure his entire life and has BS'd his way by lying cheating and stealing. The Democrats haven't done anyone any favors the way they have governed or handled the the last election.

I'm noticing some post patterns similar to a problem child at the zone. Unsure if it's them or not, but if it is.... Wonderful. (Sarcasm)
Great… well facts have to supersede opinions even when debating on message forums like these, conspiracies are not facts, and if someone’s opinion can not be verified by facts then moderators need to step in and settle the issue.

If you're referring to justa, no I don't think so. The poster at the Range who I'm 100% convinced was justa is someone else.

The reason you're noticing similar post patterns is because there's only so many ways to say absolutely nothing forever.

Conservatives are the polar opposite of the proverbial Shakespeare Monkeys. They will never, ever, ever, ever, ever type something original or insightful.

Man, this is kinda embarrassing. Someone asked you if you can identify some of these traits you rail against, and it's pretty obvious you can't. You can't speak outside basic talking points. You're just a reply bot
Pretty much, which is why I don't listen to ICRE and allow him to post here, where, unlike the Range which is infested with MAGA trash, he's outnumbered and has to either put up or accept what he gets

I prefer the opinions be attacked by facts from the other users. IMO, if someone comes in spouting MAGA lies and almost everyone else comes at him or her with facts, the more that person pushes the opinions, the more they out themselves as being unable to think for themselves

Who??

Agreed. The patterns are the same because the talking points are pulled from their BS media and gutless, coattail riding politicians whom they look up to like Apostles

The thing that tripped me up was the "fact!" At the end of the posts. That was something Justa did when he couldn't argue his talking points and just regurgitated them.

As for Justa, I mentioned him before. But at the zone, he's an extremely toxic, angry, hatefilled poster. He got a lengthy time out for bringing up my toddler in a discussion and how I was "letting her be in danger" because I don't care if trans people use the bathrooms they want to. He said she was going to get assaulted by a trans person and that it was my fault. Admin saw it and tossed him.

I think he's suspended from the spin zone again for mocking people with mental health issues. Again.

The thing that makes me believe RichJ, not bowman, is justa is that bowman tends not to talk about "Democrat cities" and how brainwashed black people are and how he's a model minority. That's a core part of justa's brand and it's identical to RichJ's.

The only difference is that at BZ he's Filipino and on the Range he's Hispanic. Which suggests to me he's actually just a white dude cosplaying.

Lecter claims he's met justa and he is who he says he is, but I have no reason to take Lecter at his word anymore.

That all makes sense, but what's the purpose of keeping them around after they've done so? Someone who can't think for himself is as much a spambot as the one we found in the Bills section earlier this week, you know?

I think we have to be careful who we believe is spamming. If someone is taking the time to reply, even if it is really simplistic, or misinformation, that isn't really spam. What woodman does is spam.

The way this type of spambot works is multiplicative. You let one of them stay even after proving they're brainless, and eventually others show up. They play the same game, not caring when they lose because debate means nothing to them, and then they just all keep playing. Eventually you've got a whole host of them and you either keep engaging in what amounts to nothing more than navel-gazing or you stop engaging and activity dies down in general.
