Remembering Things Past

Ugh, I HATED Salisbury steak, but it wasn't just Aldi. We didn;t have those when I was a kid
I'm telling ya, the stuff from Aldi was okay. Its weird how that store has evolved. In the 80s and 90s that was a store that sold low grade crap to poor people because before Save a Lot and similar stores if your family was working poor (too rich for foodstamps but too poor to be food secure) you shopped Aldi and if you went to the grocery store you bought Always Save, and oh if mom had a better paying job you got Best Choice. Yeah in the 80s and 90s they were low cost and low quality. Now they're almost as outrageously priced as other chains and they are more known for speciality foods.

Yeah man, I know these tv dinners and Banquet Pot Pies because I grew up poor. Holy shit, how fucking poor were we?

I knew them well, too. The mac and cheese was the worst - until you tried the shit they called mashed potatoes
Marie Callendar was the best thing that ever happened to "TV Dinners"

Marie Callendar isn't completely awful, but I just can't do tv dinners any more.

I liked the instant mashed potatoes burned crispy edges… hungry man fried chicken. Salisbury steak was a tasty cartilaginous burger… but was always consistent…. Oh and the raspberry or cherry cobbler was too fucking small..

No, neither can I. When I was trucking though, many nights parked at the Burger King (No longer there) across from the Flying J on Front St in Kansas City, I was eating Marie's for dinner, cooked in my Microwave

Heh, the one thing I don't get is why the hell BK is still a thing. The service has always been poor there and the food is mediocre at best. Okay, its not as bad as the stuff McClown made, but it wasn't all that good either. Flying J's on Front Street? Seriously, my mom used to take the bus to the hotel there, she worked at the front desk. If you saw a little kid in the late 80s with a 30 something woman out that way walking to or from a bus stop you may have seen my mom and I.

I didn't start making the weekly KCMO run til the mid 90's, but I looked on G-maps and that corner is ALL changed. The road leading out of the J was a short dead end after it crossed Front St. I see the Beacon is still there. Trucks would park there at night and the hookers were thick!

The Burger King on the SW corner is gone, and there's a Fleet Pride and across the St where the equipment rental is was a QT Gas Station. REALLY surprised that's gone.
