Seems like the Caps hold on to Ovechkin until the last half of the 3rd, then let him loose.
Sabres win barnburner in Washington, D.C.
Buffalo pots seven goals from second period on to shock Capitals, 8-5
Washington, D.C. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Sabres shrugged off yesterday's 7-4 loss at Philadelphia in a big way.
Facing the Metro-leading Washington Capitals, the blue and gold scored eight goals in an eventual rout at Capital One Arena.
Both sides traded goals in the opening 20-minutes. The home side opened the scoring at the halfway point of the period, when defenseman Jakob Chychrun's shot dribbled through James Reimer just past the goal line.
Less than three-minutes later, though, Tage Thompson and the Sabres responded. Tage's 37th goal came on the powerplay as he crept closer to posting his second-career 40-goal campaign.
In the second period, the Sabres opened things up with a trio of goals, in an effort to combat Chychrun's second lamp-lighter of the afternoon.
After 40-minutes of action, the blue and gold suddenly led 4-2 over the Metro-leading Capitals thanks to goals from Ryan McLeod, Alex Tuch and Sam Lafferty.
The third period was more goal-scoring madness. Washington netted three goals, including Alex Ovechkin who netted career goal No. 890 to pull within four goals of tying Wayne Gretzky for the all-time record.
Along with Ovechkin, forwards Aliaksei Protas and Pierre-Luc Dubois scored for Washington.
As for the Sabres, the team kept up with the Capitals' pressure with four goals thanks to efforts from Thompson (second powerplay tally), Jack Quinn (end-to-end breakaway), Tuch (re-direction) and Peyton Krebs (empty-net sealer).
