Could the Buffalo Sabres put together two straight strong games with their new-look lineup? Talk about a resounding yes.
Rasmus Dahlin scored 26 seconds into the game and the Sabres drove out New York goaltending ace Igor Shesterkin with a four-goal second period as they rolled to a stunning 6-1 win over the Rangers Thursday night in Madison Square Garden.
The Sabres (6-7-1) got goals from five different players and points from 15 of of their 18 skaters in the game. Zach Benson and Jack Quinn were the only players with two points, and Benson's were his first two of the season. Dahlin's goal held up for nearly 23 minutes, until Dylan Cozens scored at 2:45 of the second.
Buffalo then added three goals in a span of 2:12 of the second – by Tage Thompson, Jordan Greenway and Sam Lafferty – to drive Shesterkin from the net for the first time this season.

The Sabres stuck with the same lineup that pasted the Ottawa Senators, 5-1, on Tuesday in KeyBank Center and coach Lindy Ruff was rewarded again. Mattias Samuelsson, Henri Jokiharju and Nicolas Aube-Kubel aren't getting back in right now the way this team has played in its back-to-back wins.
The Rangers entered the game 8-2-1 and leading the NHL in goals against (24), save percentage (.934) and goal differential (plus-20). All of those figures took a huge hit.
The Dahlin goal marked the third straight period the Sabres scored in the opening minute of play. It gave Buffalo a lead it held for the rest of the night.
First period
• The Sabres got through 20 minutes with a 1-0 lead as the Rangers had an 8-6 edge in shots.• It took just 26 seconds for the Sabres to take the lead as Byram found Dahlin with a cross ice pass and the Buffalo captain slid a relatively routine wrist shot between the legs of a surprised Shesterkin for his second goal of the season.
It was Dahlin's 68th career goal, sending him past Jerry Korab into third place in franchise annals among defenseman behind Phil Housley (178) and Mike Ramsey (73). It was also the third-fastest from the opening faceoff by a Sabres blueliner, behind only Grant Ledyard (8 seconds in 1991) anbd Tyler Myers (23 seconds in 2010).
• Luukkonen was called upon for a big save on his first shot against, a good one from in tight by Will Cuylle.
• The Buffalo penalty kill got the job done with Jacob Bryson in the box for holding, as Luukkonen made three saves and multiple players contributed to getting the puck out of danger and didn't let the Rangers set up in the offensive zone for more than a few seconds at a time.
• The Buffalo penalty kill worked out of a holding call to Jacob Bryson and had to start the second period working again after Zach Benson took an offensive zone boarding penalty in the final minute. The Rangers held the puck with a 6-on-5 for 40 seconds and the whistle didn't blown until there were 2.5 seconds left, allowing the advantage to go almost fully into the second.
Second period
• The Sabres killed the Benson penalty, with the Rangers only good chance resulting in a Luukkonen save on Mika Zibanejad.• Cozens made it 2-0 at 2:45, beating Shesterkin with a quick snapshot from the left circle. It was Cozens' second goal of the season and his first one at 5 on 5. It was also Benson's first point of the season.
• The Buffalo penalty kill got to 3 for 3 when it survived a delay of game call on Beck Malenstyn.
• The Sabres broke the game wide open with three goals in a span of 2:12 that sent Shesterkin to the showers. Tage Thompson took a Peterka pass and fired home a howitzer at 11:39. Jordan Greenway tapped home a Jason Zuker pass at 12:09 and Sam Lafferty got his first as a Sabre at 13:51 by taking a Beck Malenstyn pass.
• The Sabres beat Jonathan Quick for another goal by Peterka three minutes later but the play was wiped out by an offside as the puck just came out over the blue line before the puck was shot into the net.
Third period
• The Rangers broke Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen's shutout bid at 4:21 on a deflection by Will Cuylle in front.• Lukkonnen made a big save a few seconds later on Adam Enstrom alone in front.
• Benson got his first of the season at 11:55, tipping home a Quinn pass.
