On paper, the Buffalo Bills look greatly weakened compared to the rosters they have had the past four years when they won the AFC East each time.
They traded four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texas and lost WR2 Gabriel Davis in free agency this offseason, and thus they will be reliant on a young and unproven group of wideouts.
On the other hand, the Bills still have a strong defense, and linebacker Von Miller remains an elder statesman on that side of the football.
Miller feels that because of that defense and quarterback Josh Allen, the 2024 Bills remind him of his 2015 Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos, per SiriusXM NFL Radio.
“It’s just a matter of time before we get over the hump,” Miller said. “And I reference my days back in Denver. … That’s the kind of feel that I have here. You just gotta keep goin’ at it. We still gotta great quarterback. Eventually it’s gonna go in.”
As Miller pointed out, those Broncos had failed over a couple of years in their quest to win it all, and by 2015, they had lost Pro Bowl tight end Julius Thomas and veteran wide receiver Wes Welker.
In 2015, quarterback Peyton Manning was in his final year and had clearly declined, but the team pulled together and got the job done in Super Bowl 50 against the Carolina Panthers.
For these Bills to go further than they’ve ever gone before — they have never won a Vince Lombardi Trophy and haven’t gotten to the Super Bowl since the 1993 season — they will need plenty of internal improvement.
Khalil Shakir is a young wideout they hope will pick up the slack for the departed Diggs, and they also have high hopes for second-round draft pick Keon Coleman, a wide receiver out of Florida State University.
But the Bills will likely lean on their defense, which is something those 2015 Broncos did when Miller ended up winning MVP of the Super Bowl.
