I upgraded to 1Gbps internet plan but my network stuff is old crap.

I have an Orbi router by Netgear and an Arris Surfboard modem… I’m getting 340-360 Mbps but the Orbi is “ac” meaning WiFi 5

The modem is old style Docsis 3 but offers me over 800 Mbps…. This system is slowing me down.

First off. Currently the latest tech is WiFi 7 but it’s new. All routers offer 2.4 and 5 MHz bands
Wi-Fi 7 offers an additional band at 6 Hz

Wi-Fi 7 still will be years before wildly adopted in home smart tech so..,

I’m looking for a WiFi 6 router (or 6e which offers the 3rd band)

I wanna get as close to 800 and beyond if my service bumps me over a gig.

What do you guys use?

I'm a BIG fan of Linksys WiFi 6E Routers
Orbi's are good, too, but the Linksys web app lets you really get into settings and have full control over your network.

For me, 1GB Fiber Optic
3 hard wired Linksys Tri-Band WiFi 5 Mesh routers

For me,

That’s sweet but I need to get off 5 I might jump to a 7 to future proof it.

Best Buy doe a 15% trade up thingy on a lot. I love the Orbi. It’s 2 of us with phones iPad and smart stuff just farting into the couch and binging off Apple TV.
Orbi got stupid expensive

Might try TP link Archer or go Asus. It’s gonna be 200 for 7, 120 for 6e

(Don’t need a mesh for my 1600 sf home)

You'd be surprised how much of a difference Mesh is. I have three because I have really high internet demands, but 2 is probably OK. I would be OK with WiFi 6E. 7 is like 8K. There just isn't anything out here yet and you can still set up a home network VPN or security like Wireshark, etc

Bandwidth with 6 would definitely make a mesh overkill. I’m also not hardwiring backhaul

The thing that kills me is I had the same modem for like 10-12 years… back when I had an Apple,Airport router which would have been a WiFi 3.. then a 4. Finally I did some reading and my biggest issue was the modem. So many rent from the IS). 10-15 a month … crazy. Tech changes . People freezing on a zoom call is most likely equipment… NOT unstable service.

Mesh doesn't need to be hardwired. I just have the tools and know to fish Cat 6 to the rooms I need it in

Oh I know. Especially with a Triband mesh but if nodes are to close to each other then signal issues occur as nodes fight to deliver data. I get great signal strength on a single unit. Townhouse is tiny

I have an old orbi RBR50, with two satellites ,one in the basement and one in the garage.
I’m was going to upgrade to wifi7, future proofing as you say, but decided with the 6….

Any commentary, pro or con on this, before I buy it?🤣

I don’t really need a 1,899$ unit. I don’t even think the iPhone is equipped for WiFi 7 yet, is it?

Nope. The Orbi's are solid routers and WiFi 7 isn't going to be a concern for a long time. It's like 8K TV programming, Not even an issue

I have an Orbi RBR20 (WiFi 5) . I’m def going Wifi 6e. The issue I have is I want a 2.5 Gb port because 1 gig will be future limiting. I will upgrade my modem to Docsis 3.1 and have a 2.5 Gb Ethernet port so when I eventually get 2+ Gbit serves I will be ready. Orbi decided they are Porsche with the pricing and I only see 1 Gb ports in . I’m looking at TP-Link (no,they are not getting banned) they have a 2.5 port and being 6e I’ll get the 6Ghz band for the new iPhone 16s

I am reading there might be a WiFi 8 in a few years.. who knows. There is a Linksys 6e with better ports 2.5 wan and lan but I’m not looking to hard wire my hose… that seems like a regression in tech… my house to small for mesh

All my Mesh routers are hardwired, but WiFi 8 is way to far off for me to worry about.
Upping to 2.5GB is a possibility, but I have no issues with 1GB now.

I pay for a gig but the modem and router currently give me high 300s-low 400s but if I’m gone stream everything I need 2.5G equipment for future purposes. Now if I go mesh with a 6e setup then I would connect my AppleTV via Ethernet to a node and let the 6Ghz be the backhaul wirelessly

Well, I went with the Nest WiFi. Not even sure why. Maybe because I have many Google/Nest devices. Almost like buying into an ecosystem, I guess. Setup is light years easier than it used to be, and the 3 meshed flawlessly. And coverage seems strong everywhere, but it should, I have a small house. Haven’t checked signal in back yard yet, but outside cams aren’t having any drop offs, I had one camera that dropped off a lot, and so far no problems.

Does anyone have fios? I don’t think my area will have it for a while…

NOOOOOO!!!!!
We stopped installing these because they have such a bad track record of dropping signal, slowdowns and overall limited range. I've seen jobs where they actually made Hughesnet SLOWER.

But mostly, you have the least amount of control over them than any other router system. You cannot set up port forwarding, Wireshark, fixed DNS addresses per device, etc.
