Remembering Things Past

Boulevard Mall. One of the best ever!

As a kid I collected sports cards and the old Becket price guides were one of my favorites... The smell of the pages as I looked up my new Ken Griffey Jr rookie card. Those were the days. Now my son just takes a picture of his card on the phone with an app and it tells you what it's going for in the market. I will take Beckett all day long.

Newspaper and smokes vending machines

Huge satellite dishes in yards
Yup, you went into any fine dining restaurant in the late 80s when you were waiting for your table, your dad could always put money in a cigarette vending machine. As far as the huge satellite dish. Fun story, I was so myopic as a little kid before I finally got glasses in sixth grade. My next door neighbor had two on his house and I said look, he has a huge ball cap on his house and my mom said no Gibby, those are satellite dishes.

Remember when Topps had bubble gum in them? In about 1994, I got a 1981 pack with a Frank Lewis card and I was shocked because I didn't know the Bills wore white helmets before the red helmets of my youth. Pinnacle was my favorite brand and I also liked Topps' Upper Deck.

Anyone remember Mince Meat Pie or Fruitcake around the Holidays?

No? Okay, remember those special green gobblets Arby's sold around Christmas in about 1994 or so?

Anyone remember ALF?

How about Cartoon All Stars to the Rescue? You remember Bush Sr.'s anti drug cartoon special that when viewed as an adult looks like something that would be absolutely hilarious if you were high.

Okay, what about those this is your brain on drug ad spots?

How about the Radon commercial? That may have been the most effective scare ad ever, Hell as an adult, thirty years after I saw that commercial I paid to have a radon test done on my home during the inspection.

Speaking of scare ads, who remembers the Don't Learn Electrical Safety by accident spots?

How About I've Fallen and I can't get up?

How about the "no that's sexual harrassment and I don't have to take it?"

Remember when the Clapper was something that controlled the lights and TV in your house and wasn't the nickname for McDermott?

Remember when you could get MLB games on local television, and the Cubs and Braves if you had basic cable?

Who remembers After School Specials and Very special episodes?

Remember when Cosby was the Jello Man, the spokesperson for so many kids stuff, and was a wholesome guy you wouldn't be afraid to leave your girlfriend, wife, or kids with?

Its a local thing, but good luck ever getting this jingle out of your head. Its been 30 years since I last heard this ad spot and as I lay dying and my family is begging to get me to tell them the bank info and all that I will be saying call 321 2277 any time night or day. . . .

I lost a lot of collectibles when I moved to IL. I had ALL the Topps Hockey cards for 74 and 75. I had every Spawn Comic book in the 90's. A lot of older coins, silver dollars, random sports cards. I had FIVE Pierre Turgeon rookie cards... it's fucking sad
